About Me

Hello! As you've probably guessed, my name is Nathan. I'm a multi-disciplinary designer-researcher, based in my hometown of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Fundamentally, I design for people, whether it be on an individual scale, or a more socio-cultural one. Emotions, and dynamics between people is something I find incredibly fascinating, and that, I'm sure, is rooted in my interests in history, politics, and culture. Combined with my love to create from a very young age, design presented itself as an opportunity for me to act on my interests in tangible and impactful ways. In a nutshell, I use design to leave a positive impact on people's lives, no matter how small.

I think the reason I have such an affinity with design, lies in its nature to imagine a preferred future, taking issues and problems, and working towards a solution. On a very simple level, design is a profession that seeks to do good for others. I like to think that both of these elements speak to the optimist in myself, and can be shown in my various projects. They will vary in approach, though the core aim still exists throughout.

If you are interested in reading more about what I think to be the power of design, and being creative in general, I wrote a piece titled, 'If Just For a Moment: A Manifesto For Hope.' It is the crux of why I do what I do, and the backbone of all the work you'll see here.
Understanding
The ability to understand before judging is essential, I believe. As Atticus Finch said, 'you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them.' It's difficult of course, but if we all tried to live by this, the world wouldn't be in the state it's in.
Kindness
Trying our best to do good by others. Being helpful, supportive, and all the rest of it. It seems obvious, and while most people are kind, for many it's lost. It's not even about the benefits for other people - being kind and doing good deeds is, in my opinion, one of the most rewarding feelings.
Integrity
Living with honesty, and staying true to yourself, unwavering in who you are and who you want to be. Losing yourself for perceived gain is one of the worst things you can do - if you give up yourself, you can give up just about anything.
My Values
There are some things (many things actually) that are bigger than work and personal success. Who we are as people, how we carry ourselves, and treat other people is the real measure of success in life. Our work should be a vehicle for this; a reflection and celebration of our values. With that, I want to share my own values, followed by my creative code - the essential checkmarks for my practice.

Selflessness
The epitome of some things are bigger than work. Lending a hand to those in need - people will remember you for how you treat others, rather than how good your work is.
Humility
You're not that important - at least no more important than anyone else. Lose that damn ego, it's not going to get you anywhere.
Empathy
Similar to the first one, but the ability to shift your own feelings to accommodate the feelings of the other person, just for one moment is admirable, especially if those feelings stand in opposition to your own

Accountability
Being able to check yourself is crucial - to be able to ask yourself, 'am I wavering from who I am? My values? Did I do something wrong?' Being tough, honest, critical, and acknowledging if you've wavered is no small thing.
Pride
Being proud is something we all need to learn. We are our toughest critic, which I think is great, but that needs to be balanced in the ability to celebrate who you are, and what you've achieved - there's no guarantee there will be someone to check you when you do wrong, and someone to be your greatest champion - if no one else, make sure that's you.
Joy
Balancing seriousness with joy. Finding something to uplift you, even in the toughest, most uncertain times. There's always room for a laugh.
Hope
The unwavering, essential value - hope. Things will be better

My Creative Code
Handwritten in my notebook from day one. Taking the values I hold dear, refined into a checklist of accountability that I carry in my back pocket, everywhere I go.

Design is very important to me, though the work I do is fuelled and inspired by my everyday joys and interests. To understand me better, here is a quick summary of the things I love outside of design.
